Multivariate Statistics for Biodiversity Conservation with Python

Workshop with Guatemala

Details

The “Multivariate Statistics for Biodiversity Conservation with Python” workshop was successfully held from June 10 to 12, 2025, at the facilities of the University Center of Zacapa (CUNZAC), Guatemala.

The event brought together professionals and researchers from different regions of the country —mostly women— who strengthened their technical skills in statistical analysis applied to conservation.

Key Activities:

  • Specialized training led by Ph.D. Manuel Alejandro Barrios-Izás, coordinator of the Institute for Research of Zacapa, who shared advanced statistical analysis tools using Python.
  • Presentation by CONAP (National Council of Protected Areas), highlighting the importance of scientific collaboration networks in Mesoamerica.
  • Talk by Melisa Ojeda, representing Redbioma, who shared the network’s history and the impact of its work since its inception.

Facilities Visited:

Although CUNZAC is currently under construction, participants were able to visit:

  • The Natural Sciences Museum of Zacapa collection.
  • The Molecular Biology Laboratory.

This exchange reinforced the inter-institutional commitment between CONAP and Redbioma to promote research applied to the conservation of biological diversity, with a strong gender perspective.
